Spoon :: Hollywood Forever Cemetery

August 11, 2014

Around 12 years ago I remember searching for some new semi-unheard-of bands to satisfy my appetite for something different when I came across a band called Spoon.  At the time, they had released their 3rd album (3rd and 4th being my favorites)  – a minimalistic and crunchy sound that despite it’s obvious palm-muted wit, I feared would never really see the light of day.

Today, their 8th album “They Want My Soul” exemplifies Spoon’s very particular aesthetic of simple rhythms, sing-along melodies, and under-enunciated vocals — kindof retro and with a unique lo-fi-ness that has always defined them.  Spoon have always stayed true to their style, still writing songs many of which could be swapped onto different albums but still retaining their clever indie-craftsmanship. Nearly everything they do feels taut and trendy — sometimes urgent sometimes lazy, but always great. Trust me. Girls can tell.
