Royal Blood :: The Roxy

May 17, 2014

If you haven’t yet heard of Royal Blood, wait a couple of months and they will be the talk of every rock music circuit. Royal Blood followed the energetic and unpredictable folk/blues/rock outfit The Last Internationale at the Roxy last night. Not only do Royal blood have dry organic drums but they also provide a hard riff-rock-meets-blues cocktail to wet our palettes. Mike Kerr and Ben Thatcher may only be 2 young men from Brighton, England, but the sheer volume of their aggressive and heavy 9-song set was enough to leave all of Sunset Strip with ringing ears. Their 4-song EP Out of the Black has hooked a passionate following of thrash-happy fans who certainly revere Royal Blood for their artillery of primal noise rock. Kerr, whose bass was enhanced with effects pedals, flaunted dirty riffs derivative of Zeppelin, Sabbath, and Queens of the Stone Age circa Rated R. The surge of energy at the Roxy peaked during an unhinged performance of last song “Out of the Black” – a venom-spitting track of americanized-vocals and unashamed pounding drums making it clear that Royal Blood have a gun for their mouth and a bullet with our names on it.
