Phantogram :: Hollywood Forever Cemetery

September 7, 2014

Upstate New York’s psych-pop duo Phantogram took the stage last night at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery accompanied by drummer Chris Carhar and synth/guitarist Nicholas Shelestak. The crowd was packed in with anticipation just before Phantogram opened with “Nothing But Trouble” off their 2014 album Voices. Their expansive and energetic performance of thumping spotlights and atmospheric rhythms wrapped around the crowd as they danced and swayed to Phantogram’s specialized blend of electronica. Singer Sarah Barthel’s soaring voice was most moving during fan-favorite “Billy Murray.” Wearing her sequined jacket, she became somewhat of a human disco ball – a beacon lighting the cemetery enough to wake the departed. Singer/Guitarist Josh Carter sang lead during “I Don’t Blame you” giving Barthel space to play guitar and flip her hair to their trip-hop-inspired beats. “Howling At The Moon” was one of the night’s highlights and the band’s hardest rocker showing off the duo’s ability to blend genres and compliment each other with driving guitars and melodic layers. “When I Am Small” and “Mouthfull Of Diamonds” from 2011’s EP Eyelid Movies were very popular with older fans and exemplified Phantogram’s talent for burning a textural synth-fuel. Final encore song “Celebrating Nothing” was the perfect closer with Barthel’s rising-and-falling voice permeating through the audience. The patrons that exited the lawn during the last song were serenaded on their walk by her phantom siren-call that floated through the cemetery.
