London’s dance quintet Hot Chip performed at the Greek Theater last night with two additional live members in tow. In support of their sixth studio album “Why Make Sense” released this May, they filled the venue with dance-ready fans and opened their set with “Huarache Lights” from the new record. Frontman Alexis Taylor, dressed in a jumpsuit and futuristic shades, was not much for banter between songs but then again, Hot Chip create an atmosphere that is more of a dance party than a concert. While the stage held seven musicians, most of the visual stimulation came from the saturated smoke, pulsating lights, and occasional strobes – and a few times guitarist Al Doyl jumped off the drum platform. “Started Right” from the new record showed off Hot Chip’s knack for funky electro-dance. “Over and Over” from 2006’s “The Warning” and “Cry For You” from the newest album exemplify their long-standing love-affair with repetitive synth beats as well as genre-blending – as long as those genres blend into music that gets people out of their seats. On-stage drummer Sarah Jones and multi-instrumentalist Rob Smoughton were, together, a true percussive force adding to Hot Chip’s idiosyncratic sound that still feels like it’s coming from humans rather than machine. They closed their main set with “I Feel Better” from 2010’s “One Life Stand” and then returned for a 4-song encore featuring a cover of Bruce Springsteen’s “Dancing In The Dark” and LCD Soundsystem’s “All My Friends.”

Hot Chip were opened by California dance-punk outfit !!! (Chk chk chk) whose frontman Nic Offer hopped and lunged around stage in swim shorts and threw his arms commanding attention. He noted that his least favorite part of the night was when the photographers all left —just as he was getting really sweaty.
