While an Eagles of Death Metal concert doesn’t seem like the likeliest place for kids, Monday night at the Teragram Ballroom truly felt like a family affair. In support of the new album Zipper Down, Eagles of Death Metal, this time backed by Josh Homme on drums, blazed through a hefty set of songs from their entire catalog. While Homme (also lovingly referred to as “Baby Duck”) is a huge part of the band, he rarely performs live so fans delighted at seeing him behind the kit. However, the show still completely belonged to frontman Jesse “The Devil/Boots” Hughes who strutted the stage as they opened with “Bad Dream Mama” from 2004’s ‘Peace, Love, Death Metal’ and “Make A Bang” from 2006’s Death by Sexy. Along with bass virtuoso Matt McJunkins (Puscifer, A Perfect Circle, The Beta Machine) and the bearded Dave Catching (QOTSA, Tex and the Horesheads) on guitar, the band pushed through song after song, grinning at each other and Hughes occasionally stopping at the mic to express appreciation for his hangers-on. One song was even dedicated to a fan’s unborn child and many guitar pics were tossed at the little ones up front. The band closed their main set with “Boys Bad News” only for Hughes to return solo for a couple songs. The band re-joined for a cover of “Takin’ Care Of Business.” Eagles Of Death Metal maintained their sexually-charged scuzz throughout the night with an unwavering raucous rock spirit. Hughes and Catching dueled during closer “Speaking In Tongues” – a true wank-fest which prompted some laughs from McJunkins and inappropriate hand gestures from Homme. Fans and band alike had sweat the night through to EODM’s muscular rock and all left a bit possessed with satisfaction.
