Dear Boy :: Troubadour

August 14, 2014

Los Angeles quartet Dear Boy (named after the Paul and Linda McCartney song) admitted last night’s show at the Troubadour “felt like home.” Their 5-song EP recorded in Vauxhall, London and released last September has garnered quite a buzz back in their hometown. Since their first EP, fans have been patiently waiting for another atmospheric release from Dear Boy – something the band chooses to do sparingly and carefully so their songs don’t get lost in the shuffle of the mp3 culture. Dear Boy’s Ben Grey (vocals/guitar), Austin Hayman (guitar) Keith Cooper (drums) and Nils Bue (bass) took the stage last night (lit up by large light bulbs hanging from the drum kit) to a full house of anticipation. Jumping right into the frenetic “Funeral Waves” they showed off their ability to do indie-pop with a bang. They played several new songs not on their EP and fans jumped with excitement to hear the new tracks live. Dear Boy also performed “Alluria” for the very first time at the Troubadour. “Hesitation Waltz” served as the pre-encore closer which many were singing along to as its video had just premiered that day. Grey’s dulcet vocals, energetic showmanship, and frequent hair flips left girls in the front row barely able to contain themselves as they danced the reverb-washed night away. Dear Boy like to keep an element of mystery to their indie-rock-pop tracks of harmonic romantic sheen and youthful longing. With a tinge of brit-pop in their clean jangly guitars their music sounds unforced but still hurried and always bitter sweet.
