Blonde Redhead :: The Fonda

November 23, 2014

Blonde Redhead brought their lush and sparkling indie rock to The Fonda. Wrapped in red and blue lights, vocalist Kazu Makino danced behind her keyboard as Amedeo Pace added layers of fuzzy dreaminess to their signature noise-pop. Amedeo’s twin brother Simone held the songs together with thumping beats and pounding rhythms that allowed room for the tracks to change shape. Now with their 9th studio album Barragan, Blonde Redhead once again won the fans over who were initially skeptical of their newly stripped-down efforts. Makino’s alluring siren-call and Amedeo’s sweeping shoegaze waves captivated Fonda patrons who closed their eyes and swayed to the ethereal melodrama. The crowd seemed to adore the new songs but there was clear hope in everyone’s eyes that they might hear more old tracks. “Doll Is Mine” and “Melody” from 2004’s Misery is a Butterfly showcased the band’s angelic and even eerie sound perfect for getting lost in. Although they are best known for boasting otherworldly sounds of astral daydreaming, they aren’t unable to indie-rock-out. They returned for a moody encore of “Spring and By Summer Fall” from 2007’s 23. Amedeo’s candied croon and Makino’s concentration behind the guitar created a wild impressionist painting of their sonic landscape. They completely closed the night with “23” which had everyone singing along to Makino’s heavenly “lala’s” and tapping to Simone’s pulsating and hypnotic beat.
