Last night the Mayan Theatre was filled to the brim with already-sweaty fans looking to dance to a night of catchy guitar hooks. When Brooklyn’s The Drums finally took the stage to white spotlights and screaming girls, they kicked off the night with, “Bell Laboratories” from their most recent album Encyclopedia. Persevering through a couple of line-up changes and a potential band break up, The Drums are now clearly set on a positive trajectory along with touring musicians Danny Lee Allen, Johnny Eries, and Rene Perez. Dancing around the stage with waving arms that cut through strobes, singer Jonny Pierce interacted with a throbbing crowd of moshers and female admirers. Occasionally extending his hand to fans, Pierce kept the heart of the pit shifting in whatever direction he went in in his shiny red retro jacket. As second-frontman Jacob Graham played around on his analog modular synthesizer, they covered the crowd in their signature jangly electro-pop. Fans screamed hardest for “Book Of Stories” and of course their single “Money” – every single audience member crooning along with “I wanna buy you something, but I don’t have any money”. The biggest sing-along of the night was “Book Of Revelation” and as the title suggests a lot of The Drums lyrics give nods to religion. “Face Of God” burned slowly but kept the audience swaying with crashing drums and Pierce’s anglo-indebted melodies. The Drums came back for a 5-song encore including “Don’t Be A Jerk, Jonny” which featured vocals from Drew Citron of Beverly.
